Comments and Prayers About Peace

—Habib Nooh

The primary meaning of Islam is “submission,” but it also carries a deeper, extended meaning of peace and well-being, due to its linguistic connection to the word salam (peace).

Islam is a religion that aims to establish peace and justice on earth. This aligns with the core concept of submission to a higher power—Allah—and the sincere pursuit of peace.

As Muslims, we love peace. We strive to live in peace, and we express it in our daily lives—even in the way we greet one another. We believe that Allah is the Source of Peace. He is the Giver of Peace. As-Salam is one of His Beautiful Names, as mentioned in the Qur’an in Surah Al-Hashr.

That is why we seek peace from Allah. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to supplicate for peace after every prayer.

The following hadith, reported by Imam Muslim (Hadith 592) and Imam Tirmidhi (Hadith 298), and narrated by A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her), captures the Prophet’s beautiful words:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say after finishing the prayer:

“Allahumma antas Salaam, mikas Salaam, tabaarakta yaa zal Jalaali wal Ikraam.”

“O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of majesty and honor.”
